Spidey Cat

Spidey Love

Spidey cat taught me that animals who come into our lives can offer us profound lessons, if we open our hearts enough to learn.

Spidey never knew a stranger. When I found her as a stray kitten, I marveled at how she chose my large male tabby as her surrogate parent, and how he instantly obliged. He'd groom her like a mother cat would, and curl protectively around her whenever she slept.

At first, I worried that Spidey's bold and friendly spirit might get her into trouble; she once approached a barking dog as if he was her long lost friend. Instead, she somehow won over even the most cat-averse visitors.

It took me years to realize that it wasn't exactly fearlessness that drove Spidey to greet all the world with love, but an inherent confidence in her own sense of belonging. It was as if she thought: "I'm a cat. I was created to be exactly who I am. Therefore, how could anyone not love me?"

So, Spidey went through life both being loved, and loving deeply. And she made no distinction across species. She once tried to comfort my crying son by gently picking him up by the scruff of his neck — as if he was her own kitten! They shared a close connection, and when Spidey passed away at the age of 23, my 16-year-old son had never known life without her.

As humans, I think some of us struggle with feeling worthy of being loved — at least I feel unsure sometimes. Now, all I have to do is think of Spidey to remember that simply being who we are is enough.
